We don't want to be like the soldier who turns all personal responsibility for his choices over to another and claims innocence of wrongdoing: "I was just following orders." But at the same time we want to commit ourselves with absolute dedication to something greater than ourselves. We don't want to be alone and separate, a small fragment seeking small comforts. Within us we can feel a greatness we want to be a part of and take action with. We want to do things together with this "something other." We want to feel connected, hooked up, in communication.
This month, this day, this moment, Teiwaz inspires me to ask questions about promises, obligations, giving my word, taking care of what love asks me to take care of. I wish above all else to be true to what I'm here to do. I'm not always successful, of course. I'm not perfected yet. There are always those personal desires and conditions that thwart them. What to do? Some "new age" personalities focus on "you can get anything, have it all, be anything, do anything" and so forth; God is Santa Claus. What I have found is that life is more complicated than that. We have connections, loyalties, promises to keep. And we must be very careful to keep our word.
